Stream Fishing

One of the highlights to our fishing adventures is the 40 plus river and streams to choose from.  Formed from the surrounding mountains, clear water streams grow as they reach the sound, producing perfect habitat for salmon and trout.  The stream you choose to fish depends on the targeted species and time of year.  Our custom built 32 ft. landing craft makes access to surrounding secluded streams easy and comfortable.

Flying to streams along the coast and nearby islands is another way to access bounty filled streams.  A spectacular beach landing along the Gulf of Alaska is a memorable experience, and a great way to catch ocean bright fish.  When beach landings are not available, a float plane can be utilized.

Most streams run crystal clear and are easy to wade.  Taking time to enjoy the surroundings and have a stream side lunch is recommended.

Fly Fishing
Beginner or expert this will be a fly fishing experience of a life time. From in front of the lodge to remote and very remote sites, get ready for tight lines. This area is the home to most line class records for Silver salmon. Also unique to this area is the productivity of dry flies for Silvers. The terms Poppers and Wogging may sound strange, but these are very visually stimulating ways to catch Silvers when the conditions are right.

Fly fishing instruction is available at Orca Adventure Lodge and our guides enjoy sharing their local knowledge. A fly tying area at the lodge is a popular meeting place in the evenings. Flies are available at Orca, or you can gear up before you arrive. We will be happy to send you information on what you will need and where you can get it. Please call or send us an e-mail anytime.

Saltwater
From Orca Inlet, to Prince William Sound, to the isolated waters of Cape St. Elias, saltwater fishing opportunities abound in the Cordova area.  Halibut, ling cod, and various rockfish including red snapper can be caught from May until early August utlizing our newly constructed 32 foot catemeran to take you into remote waters that we haven't had access to in years past.  We are also able to use a unique downrigger setup to troll for a variety of salmon species depending on the season.  This a great way to catch ocean fresh salmon before they even hit the rivers!  Fishing Orca Inlet and the eastern portion of Prince William can be a blast, but if a once in a lifetime salt water fishing opportunity is what you seek, than look no further than Cape St. Elias.

Remote Camps
Hidden Cove

Hidden CoveHidden Cove is the ideal image when an angler thinks of an Alaskan river to fish. It is a stunning setting with mountains on both sides of this wooded river valley leading right to the Gulf of Alaska and its surf swept beaches. Offering a great variety of fishing locations as the river branches into two forks, in addition to the “dry fly hole” located behind camp.

Orca aircraft transports you on a short 20 minute plane ride across the magnificent Copper River Delta to our landing strip at Hidden Cove. The camp is located in the spruce trees a few hundred yards from the airstrip. It is actually located in an abandoned town site where old relics and steam engines are scattered through the woods. The camp consists of a new main cabin and 3 guest cabins. The new main cabin replaces our old lodge building, the last standing building in the old town site. The new cabin is very comfortable with 4 guest rooms upstairs and a modern kitchen downstairs along with a dining hall and shower / bathroom. The guest cabins are simple yet comfortable with either wood or oil heat.

Fishing the river is the highlight of the camp, of course. As the lower end of the river in front of the camp is tidal we generally travel up river via skiff to fish. The river has plenty of gravel bars for easy wading and casting, as well as deep pools and eddies for the fish to school in. It is a fly- fisher’s heaven as the Silvers are bright and aggressive, fresh out of the salt water. The Dry Fly Hole is a nice bit of variety. It is picturesque with its old growth twisted trees surrounding it. A canoe is cached there to paddle the still ponds.

Hidden CoveWhile the chrome bright Silver Salmon are the main attraction, there are trout and other species of salmon to be caught as well. The sea run Dolly Varden are plentiful as well as Cutthroat trout. This year in the upper ponds we also caught Rainbows. The sandy beaches across the river also offer Razor Clams and Dungeness crab for those willing to leave the river for a while – funny how seldom this happens!

Sunshine Point

Sunshine PointSunshine Point is our latest camp we have offering world class Silver Salmon fishing on Alaska’s Gulf Coast. With so much to explore, there are many branches and tributaries of the main river we haven’t fished yet.

Only 15 minutes from Cordova by air, yet Sunshine Point is our most remote camp in many ways. Seldom is another person seen on this trip, the vastness of the fishing area can be a bit overwhelming to some.

The camp is located on the only piece of private property on the eastern Copper River Delta, on an old railroad route. Pieces of overgrown railroad history are still visible under the rainforest canopy. We access the camp via floatplane, landing in a narrow slough. After docking, we head down a trail that follows the old rail line to the camp. Consisting of 2 comfortable guest cabins and a new social and dining cabin, camp is relatively simple. Each is cozy and heated by wood.

Sunshine PointThe main fishing river is about a 4 mile jet skiff ride. We have custom built our boats especially for this area with higher sides for added safety. There are numerous fishing holes closer; including a hidden lake, but incredible fishing upriver beckons most. The river braids out with a contoured sandy bottom that school up the Silvers. The gin clear water, sandy beaches and easy wading offer superb sight casting. This is simply the best location we have found for consistent surface fishing for Silvers. A combination of water depth, clarity and number of fish make this an incredible site.

Cape St. Elias Fishing Adventure
Cape St. Elias Fishing AdventureSeldom fished locale offers trophy potential, In shallow water, for Halibut and Ling Cod!

Alaska offers many possibilities for deep sea fishing along its rugged coast. Popular ports like Homer and Sitka are a bustle with charter boats and fishers. What is increasingly more difficult to find is a truly remarkable ocean fishery.

Cape St. Elias is such a fishery. Its setting is a dramatic backdrop to the fishery. The Gulf of Alaska in general is a steady arch with the continental shelf following the same arch 100 or so miles off-shore. This pattern is broken by the uninhabited Kayak Island that suddenly juts straight offshore and the shelf in turn cuts toward it, creating a major upwelling. This upwelling creates a nutrient rich feeding area where fish of all types gather to feed.

Catching a giant Ling or Halibut in deep water is an exciting experience but fishing the relative shallow waters of the Cape makes it an all together different ballgame. We fish in as shallow as 30 feet and rarely over 120 feet. Imagine the power and fight an 80 pound Ling or a 100 pound + Halibut will have that shallow! 260 pounds is the largest halibut we have caught thus far with the average size far higher than any other place we have fished. The bio-mass of sea bass and other fish is amazing. Often the schools get excited by the jigs and can be seen swirling from the surface! Salmon are often caught incidentally as well.

Why are we the only boat to fish here while literally hundreds fish other locations? Access is the main reason. It is literally as far as you can get from anywhere along the Gulf Coast. Weather also plays a role as in climate weather the Cape is very exposed.
